Rule #36 "Adopt the Phrase Yes And.."

There is a practice in improv that is as follows. I say to you, “There’s a purple elephant in the room.” You respond, “No there isn’t.” You’ve just killed the scene. You’ve now turned it into an argument for the existence of the elephant. The correct tactic is to use the “yes and” technique. Example: “There’s an elephant in the room.” The yes and response could be, “Oh I’m sorry. Are you allergic to elephants?” This then elicits a response and creates room for dialogue.

Rule #35 Do the "Do Over" The First Time!

“Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now.”-Viktor Frankl

How many times have you said, “If I had it to do all over again I would...?” I know I have uttered those words more times than I care to recall. In the above quote Viktor Frankl gives an excellent strategy to limit the need for “do overs.” What if we didn’t take our loved ones for granted? What if we went ahead and put in the extra effort? What if we told ourselves, “Shut up you are qualified. You can do this, and a change will not destroy your life. Go ahead. Do it!”

#34 “Ask What Job Have I Been Hired to Perform?"

The late consultant Clayton Christensen came up with a revolutionary way to look at product development. In an effort to understand what made companies successful he conceived of the notion executives should be asking, “What job would consumers want to hire a product to do?” This was one aspect of his “disruptive innovation,” which I first learned of in business school through his book, “The Innovator's Dilemma.”

Rule #33 Get to Know Bill Murray

As someone who has grown up watching Bill Murray my entire life, it is interesting to see what he’s become. He’s almost like a mythical creature. He’s right up there with Big Foot, aliens, or Donald Trump’s hair. However, in the case of Bill Murray he’s real. He’s very real. Stories abound of his antics. He is known for going up to people in the most random of situations and leaving them with the quip, “They’ll never believe you.”

Rule #32 Give it 85% Every Time

In a study from Nature Communications researches found that in learning a skill such as a language, playing an instrument, etc the failure rate of 15% seemed to be the maximum allowable while still showing proficiency in the acquired task. That means if you are learning French you don’t have to be 100% fluent. You can shoot for 85% and function among the Parisians just fine.

Rule #31 "Learn to Cha-Cha Like Bruce Lee"

Lee believed fighting style was personal like Fred Astaire dancing vs. Gene Kelly or Emmitt Smith running a football vs. Jim Brown. The style is unique to the artist. It was an act of self-expression to Lee. We remember Bruce Lee because his style stood out. One can trace this unique style to 1957 when Lee won the cha-cha championship. After taking dance lessons in Hong Kong, Lee started to incorporate dance movements into his fighting. For instance, while Lee’s opponents all stood still, Lee would constantly bounce around back and forth, always moving like a dancer. Like a dance he would then begin to incorporate his opponent’s moves into his own fighting.

Rule #30 Go The Extra Mile Before You Have To Otherwise it Won't Matter

Once I was helping a client sell their home. This was a very nice couple who I attended church with. They had seen another of my listings and wanted to make an offer. Although they didn’t get that house, it moved them to go ahead and put their home on the market and begging the search for their new home. This meant I stood to sell their home and make in the neighborhood of $12,000 plus sell them a new home. This was a dream scenario.

Rule #28 “Have Ideas-Big Ones!”

Let’s say I tell you the only way your family can be saved is if you get to the moon, pick up a moon rock and bring it back to earth, what do you do? At first many just sit silent. Some will come out and say It’s impossible. I then push. “You have to get there. Failure is not an option. Tell me the first thing you would do. Inevitably someone finally pops up and says, “Well, I guess I’d first call NASA.” Bingo! There you have it. The first idea. From there what would you do? And so it goes. The point being it forces the participants to begin generating ideas.

Rule #27 “Be God-like When You Eat.”

I believe Epictetus is telling us to live within our means. I believe he is also telling us not to strain so hard for vain pursuits be it material items, delicacies or what have you. Let our cravings come second to our desire to live a tranquil life of discipline and contentment. I am finding more and more that it is a much greater joy to not desire anything at all than to desire and acquire it. The former makes for a much more peaceful life.

Rule #26 “Don’t Be Pathetic”

As I write this we are in the middle of a global pandemic. It literally feels like the calm before the coming apocalypse. However, I’m still alive and so are you. So until someone turns the lights out for good, let’s live. To do otherwise is just pathetic.

Rule #23 “Create a Not To Do List” -Thank you Dean Graziosi

I was scared to death. In my mind it was only a matter of time before I would go broke. What the hell had I done? As I pushed the lawnmower I had scored for a whopping $50 to the median between my office building and loop 323 in Tyler I thought to myself, “I have to mow the grass. I cannot afford to pay anyone to do it. Every penny counts.”

Rule #22 "Think"

Undoubtedly one of the most recognizable sculptures in the world is “The Thinker.” Like the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper or Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, one needn’t be an art aficionado to recognize the work immediately. I remember first seeing it as a child. As strange as this seems I remember identifying it as an example of laziness. It appeared to me a man just sitting doing nothing of any utility value. He was just sitting there naked and bored as I saw it.

Rule #21 Love To Do Things The Right Way Like Johnny Carrabba

Earlier this year I walked into the first restaurant of the now more than 200 restaurants bearing the name Carrabba’s. You know how it is when you walk in to a place where an incredible story began? It’s like walking back in time to a certain degree. You walk in and then all of the sudden you say to yourself, “Wow. So this is where it all began.” It adds life to what I do. I listen to stories on my Texas Titan Podcast.
