Want to Reduce Your Chances of Mortality by a Factor of 5X? Here's the Prescription
I had just purchased my first company. I was 28. The owner of the company or I should say the former 50% owner of the company stayed on after the acquisition. The 50% he didn’t own when I bought the firm belonged to his father, the founder of the company.
Not long after I purchased my first real estate company my friend’s father was diagnosed with cancer. He was 86 and reduced to spending most of his days in bed taking all his food through a straw.
One day I asked my friend how his father was fairing. His answer has stuck with me ever since.
“Jason, Dad is alive, but he’s not living.”

Why is Skepticism Under Attack? Do We Really Need Seat Belts For Our Brains?
So what is happening? Why is Joe Rogan under such attack? He once said he would vote for Bernie Sanders. I have no idea what his politics are. However, his personal treatment of his COVID infection along with guests he’s had on to ask about vaccines has caused the American legacy media to lose their sh**.
Why? I’m not some Joe Rogan fanboy. As a matter of fact I’ve probably listened to a total of 3 full episodes of Rogan. I do however watch some of his YouTube clips. He gets all the best guests. I agree with some of his guests and some I don't. He had Bernie Sanders on. I don’t agree with Bernie’s take on governance. I still listened. it was a great place for me to hear what Bernie had to say.
He had Jordan Peterson on. I like Jordan Peterson’s writing and thinking. He has liberals, conservatives, Bill Maher, Ben Shapiro. It doesn’t matter. Joe Rogan has anyone on he seems to think he can learn something from.
I admire that. The largest podcaster in the world is who he is for one primary reason-he's curious.
I’d dare say what has made him so successful is he offers a (oh my gosh I can’t believe I’m going to write this) “safe space” for all to come and listen to differing opinions. Joe Rogan's show is the pro sporting event of current events.

The Problem With Gaining Pleasure With No Struggle. A Word From Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman
What the hell is going on? Why are people so miserable yet so sedated by pleasure all at the same time?
I just learned one of my college friends overdosed and died recently. He was not some out there, loser who was down and out. He was a typical middle aged guy making his way.
I’ve had two fraternity brothers die at their own hands. I have one who lost his son to suicide during the pandemic. What the hell is happening?

Self Love or Self Delussion-My Take On Self Magazines "Future of Fitness" Article
"That’s why I’m so excited to introduce our first editorial package of 2022, the Future of Fitness Issue. In this digital issue’s articles and essays, when we say future we’re not talking about the latest fitness trackers or streaming workout equipment. We’re talking about the people who are changing the landscape of an industry that has, for too long, excluded many. Over the past few years, thanks to the body positivity movement as well as other thoughtful explorations that have challenged complacent ideas about weight and size, we’ve seen an important shift in how we discuss larger bodies."

Are You More Afraid to Die or To Live?
Which is it? Are you afraid to live or die? As my high school coach used to lament, play to win. Don’t play to not lose. Which camp do you fall in?
Over the past two years many of our fellow humans have been faced with mortality in a way not known in modern times. Let’s face it. Before COVID life was pretty safe. The thought of a global “plague” was something most of us couldn’t fathom. In fact the word plague seemed like a relic from the past.
There was that period after 9/11 when we all sensed a little unease in big cities and public places for fear of the next terror attack, but even that waned with time. Starvation is something that has been all but eradicated in first world countries.

So What's Up With Joe Rogan And GETTR Vs. Twitter? Oh, and Who The Heck is Dr. Robert Malone and Why Was He Banned From Twitter?
So I rarely look at two things. 1. The news. I know this sounds weird for a guy who maintains a newsletter and podcast but it's true. From day to day I rarely know the headlines. 2. Twitter. I just think Twitter is a dumpster fire.
I've tried to be active on it to gain attention to the podcast and this newsletter, but every time I wondering into the Twitter-verse I come out needing a drink (which I never have anymore) and needing a shower from all the verbal sh** being flung all over the place. I really hate the platform.
Well, this week something odd happened. A headline popped up somewhere that involved Twitter, some app I'd never heard of called GETTR run by a guy I sort of know from my political past (Jason Miller), Joe Rogan and COVID. Shweew! That's a lot.

Become a Conversation Ninja
Good conversation is an art. It requires really good listening. I want to try to be a better conversationalist so I have to become a better listener.
To constantly bring whatever someone tells you back to a story about yourself is terribly egotistical and narcissistic. There's a big difference between listening and just waiting for your turn to speak.
One thing I'm trying to do is ask more questions. I fail miserably most of the time, but what I want to do is start asking at least three questions about the person or (topic at hand) I'm speaking to/about before offering my take or some anecdote on the subject at hand. This is really important on things we have very strong opinions on.

The Wonders of Matcha Green Tea
I’m always looking for ways to extend longevity. I also want to make sure I maintain proper brain health. One of the most studied and confirmed supporters of brain health and overall wellness is green tea, but not all green teas are created equal. There is one that stands out above the rest. That tea is Matcha.
Daily consumption of green tea catechins (the polyphenols in tea) delays memory regression and brain dysfunction in aged mice. An excellent example of one of the many studies on green tea comes out of Japan, where a group of scientists confirmed that higher consumption of green tea is associated with better results in cognitive testing in elderly subjects. Tea provides flavonoids, caffeine, and L-theanine, an amino acid that features a range of health benefits, including stress reduction and cognitive improvement.
“Conclusion: A higher consumption of green tea is associated with a lower prevalence of cognitive impairment in humans.”

Forgiveness For Heart Health
I’m a flawed human. We all are. However, I want to get better. Heck, the motto for my podcast is “Improve always in ALL ways.” That literally means ALL ways even the ones I don’t want to tackle.
One of these areas is the act of forgiveness. I’ve been known to hold onto bitterness and unforgiveness. Why is this? Well, it’s pretty simple. If I forgive the person who wronged me, I’m letting them off the hook. I’m letting down my guard. This leaves me open to be hurt again. No sir. I must keep the bitterness alive. Shoot. I’m not doing them any favors by forgiving them either. I’m enabling their bad behavior.
Have you ever thought these thoughts? Yea. I thought so. Well, I’m here to tell you I’ve learned in this journey the person being forgiven isn’t the one benefiting the most. In fact, if they are a decent human even if you offer forgiveness they will most likely live with the pain of the harm they inflicted for a long time.

Are You Looking So Hard You Can't See Anything?
I'm directionally challenged. I admit it. If I didn't, Mrs. Wright would be the first to rat me out. I can get lost in a paper sack. What's worst is when I have the address. I've been given some details about the destination and then set out to find it.
There's almost a guarantee I will drive by my subject location a handful of times. Why is this? Does my brain just short circuit? Am I a moron? Don't answer the second question. It turns out this is a normal occurrence.
Come to find out, you can in fact miss the forest for the trees. Maybe it’s just luck. Maybe some people just have an internal navigator allowing them to better recognize where they’re going. Picking up on the idea of luck, there is some science behind those folks who seem to be luckier than most.

The Wonders of Creatine. If You Aren't Taking It, Read This!
So what is creatine monohydrate? I first took creatine when I was in college (I think). I, like so many other college dudes, wanted to be jacked, rippsky, swole, hard, cut…well, you get the picture.
So at some point creatine came into my supplement stack. The most research I did back then was peruse the pages of Men’s Health or Flex. If the advertisement was good enough or there was a featured article including a testimonial of Gregg Avedon, the chances of me trying the product were pretty high.

Can Rituals Be the Key to a Better Life and Good Habits? Here's What I Learned From Confucius
“To learn and then at the appropriate time put into practice what you have learned: is this not a pleasure? To have friends arrive from afar: is this not a joy? To be patient even when others do not understand: is this not the way of an accomplished person?”-Confucius
Are we merely a reflection of the things we observe and encounter? If so, how can we ever become truly ‘good?’ I recently took a Harvard course on Happiness and what Chinese philosophy teaches about it. Most of the course was based on the teachings of Confucius.

The "Fast Without Fasting" Protocol for a Younger, Healthier, Stronger Gut Made For Reducing Body Fat and The Dangerous Habitat We Live In
Once upon a time in a land far far away there lived primitive humans. They slept in caves or other makeshift shelters. They hunted and gathered their food. Danger lurked behind every bush, tree or knoll.
There were no restaurants. There were no packaged foods. There was no one on a television harkening you to Arby’s to come retrieve your meat filled sandwich.
There was no eating without exertion either. Getting food to eat took great time and effort. The hunter risked his life for a meal. Now the food creates the danger. Wow. Think about that for a second. There is now more danger in what and how much we eat than actually obtaining what we eat. That’s a huge shift.

Insulin and Glucagon The Tag Team Wrestlers of the Hormone World!
I have a lot of people, some very close to me, who are constantly asking me about weight loss. It's really tough. I want so badly to help them, but most just aren't ready to make the changes necessary to lose the weight they desire.
However, that doesn't stop me from trying to learn as much as I can about ways to unlock healthy habits and well-being. Further, I’m always looking for ways to help those who ask for it.
If you happen to be one of those people who want to lose weight, but you've pretty much narrowed it down to calorie restriction or exercise to make it happen, this is for you.
You have to know something about your body. It was not made for the habitat we live in. Let that sink in for a moment. Your-body-was-not-made-for-the-habitat-you currently live in. So what do I mean by this?
I've been researching this buzz phrase of 'ancestral living.' It's being made popular by all sorts of people, most notably Mark Sisson, founder of Primal Health as well as Ben Greenfield and many others.. Intermittent fasting is said to be effective because it mimics how our ancient ancestors ate.

Don't be Afraid. Be Informed
There is a small almond shaped part of the brain known as the amygdala. It’s the brain’s danger sensor that lets us know whether we should be afraid or not. In prehistoric times the amygdala is what made our primitive ancestors run when they heard something in a bush. After all, it could have been a saber toothed tiger with a hearty appetite.

This past week I included the above quote by Michael Jordon. I included in it a preamble referring to the documentary “The Last Dance.” I’m not easily taken by other humans. They have to do something truly remarkable to get me to dig deeper into who they really are. Once I start the digging again like mining for gold it’s rare I feel as though I struck it rich. In the case of Michael Jordon I as a 45 year old man have far more admiration for him now than I ever had when I was 20 watching him play at the height of his career.
