Rule#40 "Be Quiet"

In the Bible Ecclesiastes 4:6 reads, “Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.” Fred aka Mr. Rogers was one of the biggest proponents of quiet ever. See his comments on the subject here in an interview with Charlie Rose.

The older I get the more I realize the precious value of quiet. It’s calming. I’ve learned it’s ok to just sit and be. We are so often consumed with the text instead of the “white spaces” between the paragraphs in our books of life. It’s in that white space we plan. We think. We calm our mind and prepare for the paragraphs ahead.

I’ve adopted mediation. While I use Sam Harris’ “Waking Up” app I think there’s value in just sitting and consciously remaining silent for a period of time. Let the only endeavor be to wash your mind clean of all the clutter the world fils it with.
