Rule #63 "Make Every Move a Yoga Pose"

Ok so I’m going to get some serious push back on this concept, but let me make my case. The other day I was doing Yoga. The instructor made a comment that really stuck with me. We were moving from one pose to another, and he let us know that every move was a pose in Yoga. Every single movement was its own pose.

The idea being don’t be sloppy. Take time and consideration when transferring from one pose to the next. This is good advice to someone like me. When I do Yoga I look like a stiff Neanderthal with the coordination of a clown on a unicycle with a flat tire. It’s ugly.

As I pondered this suggestion I thought about how most of us live life. As I’ve become more diligent in my desire to improve always in ALL ways, (see The Vitruvian Project) I realize how many people around me never even consider self improvement. They just go about life transferring from one pose to the next with little or no regard for how they are performing.

Don’t do this. I’m not saying we should scrutinize our every move. Then life really does become just a “performance” and that will wear you down so don’t do that. However, I highly suggest taking the time to think before you speak. Think before you eat. Think before you move from one activity to the next.

Make as many of life’s moments count as possible. Imagine if before every interaction with your spouse, friends, children or neighbor you gave a half second of consideration to how you wanted this interaction to look. How do you want the person to feel in our presence or when we leave them?

Like in Yoga, make every moment a pose to be admired. Make it thoughtful. All these poses compounded will lead to a much more intentional and purposeful life lived.

You rule!
