Improvement #65 Tame Your Mind
The mind is pretty selfish. After all, it makes up less than 2% of our body weight yet hogs 20% of the energy. What’s more, unlike a car it stays revved up even when we aren’t using it. Here’s what I mean. When you sit in a car and rev the engine the RPM’s increase. Then you take your foot off the pedal and the RPMs are lessened By contrast when you are at rest or “idling” your brain still stays revved up.
In the Dawson Church book, “Bliss Brain” Church explains what is happening here. He meticulously lays out what’s happening when our brains are at rest vs. highly engaged yet using equal amounts of high energy. The brain is always in action. It never really rests.
It’s up to us to take the time to quiet the brain. It reminds me of a bunch of children running around on a playground. They are going all over the place. There is no order. It’s just chaos. Therefore, it’s almost impossible to manage the behavior of the children.
Now let’s say we take control. Some children go to the swings. Some will head over to play kickball. Some will crush some tether ball. I loved tether ball though I sucked at it. Watching a good tether ball match was awesome at Douglas School circa 1985.
All the children are still expounding energy. However, it has now been routed, directed and focused. This leaves room for the children to find a place of quiet that has been opened up. This is how our brain works. We must learn to master its activity so we can make sure its doing what we want it to do. If we can’t regulate how much energy it’s going to consume, we can at least determine where that energy is directed.
