Rule #54 "Meditation- just Freaking Do It!"

I know I know. Meditation seems all whoo whoo and for “those” kind of people. You know the new age, holistic medicine, folks. Well, you know what kind of people it’s also for? People like billionaire hedge fund manager Ray Dalio.

How important does Ray Dalio think meditation is? In a 2018 CNBC interview he said, “ It’s the single most important reason' for my success. ... "It is certainly the greatest gift I can give anyone."

Pretty strong endorsement if you asked me.

The first podcast I ever subscribed to was the Tim Ferriss show. I had read his book “The 4 Hour Work Week” and in my first ever search for a podcast I came across his. That was nearly 10 years ago and hundreds of episodes later I’m still listening. On Tim’s show he interviews peak performers looking for what makes them so effective.

So what’s the greatest commonality among all these masters of the universe? Yup. You guessed it. They all practice some sort of meditation or mindfulness. Personally, I subscribe to Sam Harris’s “Waking Up” app. However, there are plenty other options. Just stopping throughout your day and closing your eyes and counting your breaths for 1 minute is a start. One minute. Who can’t spare one minute to adopt the habit of a billionaire?

Don’t have time to meditate? That’s nonsense. Hugh Jackman once said, “When people tell me they don’t have time to meditate I tell them that’s like saying you don’t have time to take a shower.”

Look, do the research. Don’t overthink it. There is no “being good” at meditating. You don’t have to practice some Eastern mysticism. It’s really about slowing down your body’s CPU. The brain uses between 20-25% of your body’s energy. It’s an energy hog always at work. Keep it clear, dusted and clean with a bit of meditation.

You will be amazed at how much better you can perform with a calm mind.

You rule!
