Make Your Own Rules #7

Rule #7

Rule: Drink Plenty of Water and Get Lots of Rest

Rule Maker: Coach Dick Schofield

Learn More About the Rule: Do it. Drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest. Results may vary.

It’s so easy these days to get caught up on any number of things to stay healthy. Do I do the Keto diet? Do I drink bulletproof coffee? Is coffee good for me or bad for me? Do I do Crossfit or should I stick with traditional training? I hear intermittent fasting is the best thing ever. Will the new Richard Simmons VHS be too much for me? If not, do I still have to wear those short striped shorts to receive the same amazing results Richard has? Why is Richard Simmons so oily? We live in the most prosperous and knowledge rich times ever known to mankind. As such it’s so easy to get caught up in the minutiae of it all.

I once had a teacher who was also the men’s head basketball coach at Sulphur Springs High School. His name was Dick Schofield. While I didn’t play basketball, I was privy to Coach Schofield’s advice having him as an Algebra teacher. Just like he would tell his players after every practice, he would tell his students upon its conclusion, “Drink plenty of water and get lots of rest.” Anyone can execute this health regimine, and any human no matter who they are will benefit from practicing it.

In Jon Acuff’s book “Finish” he makes the argument that we often set our goals in such a fashion they tend to be crushing. If you want to lose 10lbs start my making a goal to lose 3. Once that goal is attained the next three will be much more achievable. If however, 10 is the number from the get go, when you lose 3 the final 7 look daunting. Don’t do that. Instead, start with something manageable that you know you can crush. This will serve as motivation to get to the next milestone.

If you are someone who drinks too much, eats too much, stays up late, doesn’t wear SPF, cusses too much, fires up the occasional cig and you want to start a healthier lifestyle don’t try to tackle it all at once. Instead start by drinking plenty of water and getting lots of rest. Once you’ve mastered this add another piece to the puzzle. Before long, you’ll be a new hydrated and well rested you. Keep it simple and don’t get fancy.
